Subject: Research on Open University- Posted October 11, 2009 7:35 pm

Steve

Hi, I'm doing a paper on OU and I have a couple of questions if someone can answer. I want to know how many people does the OU employ (I need to know how many people OU gives employment to) and also, what grant is given by the government to Open University and how much money the university makes from its courses. I also need stats on OU website. I know this is hard to find - if someone can point me to someone (a professor maybe) who can help me, would be great. Thanks

Indian catering

Hi, I want to know if there are any courses on Indian catering. I run an Indian catering business, and I've never really been educated - It has just been the way my family started it - no changes and therefor I want to know if there are any courses for Indian catering or Indian caterers that teach about hygene, food production, vegetarian good, organic food etc. I have scanned the official site, but didn't find much catering information. May be they don't teach it - please confirm if you know or let me know where else I can pursue a course in Indian catering. Thanks

Answer by voluntary user(s)

Thank you for clarifying this and it was very prompt. Highly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

The Open University doesn't offer any courses in catering. There are business courses, but I would try Learn Direct or your local colleges.

1) I'd like to do T189 (digital photography) next year after I've completed DD101, will I be given a course grant if I'm still on the qualifying benefits even though I'll be receiving a course grant for DD101? I'd like to buy a new digital camera for the course..

2) When will I get offered the PC grant for DD101? Will it be after the course has started or before? Do I get the money before I buy the PC or do I have to buy the PC and they pay me back?

TIA.
x

A FEE GRANT FOR A 60CREDITS COURSE COULD AFFECT MY JOBSEEKERS INCOME BASED AND HOUSING BENEFITS?I MEAN,IF I RECEIVE A FEES GRANT,CAN I STILL GET THE FULL AMOUNT OF JOBSEEKERS AND HOUSING BENEFITS?A FEES GRANT COULD AFFECT MY INCOME FOR BENEFITS ELIGIBILITY?

Answer by voluntary user(s)

As long as the course is part time, your Jobseekers will not be affected. I'm on the same form of JSA and I've registered for my course, I also had my advisor sign a form I was given.

Hi,I am hoping to start course K101 in febuary, I missed the october deadline, but I was going to do the Understanding Children course in the mean time (want to be a social worker) but I dont have a landline phone only a mobile phone. will this be a problem?

Answer by voluntary user(s)

I only have a mobile phone, on contract, so during my Openings course, I always phoned my tutor. I offered to do this, so I think it would depend on whether you mind making the calls, or whether your tutor minds calling your mobile.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO GET JOBSEEKERS INCOME- BASED DURING A COURSE OF 60 CREDITS? I 'M NOW GETTING THEM AND I WANT TO BE SURE THAT A 60 CREDITS COURSE WON'T PREVENT ME FROM GETTING JOBSEEKERS ALLOWANCE INCOME BASED.WILL MY JOBSEEKERS WILL BE REDUCED OR NOT?

Answer by voluntary user(s)

No, you cannot get job seekers income if you're studying in a regular university. I'm not sure about the 60 credits scene. You should call open university directly or email them.
_____________________________________________________

Laura, this is exactly what I'm looking for, and really, have had no luck looking on various sites. I asked a friend about getting job seeker's allowance after doing a 60 credits Open University course and he said that we'll still get the allowance. But I think I need to confirm this, as he wasn't sure. Please do post an answer to this question once you do know. i'll check back. Thanks Natalie

CAN I STUDY FROM DISTANCE TO BECOME AN ENGLISH TEACHER? HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? WHAT DO I NEEED TO DO?

Answer by voluntary user(s)

You need a first degree to become an English Teacher with at least half to two third of your degree to be in the subject you want to teach. Unfortunately, the OU doesn't offer a PGCE in English to become a teacher. If you need the first degree, visit www.open.ac.uk/becoming-a-teacher which will advise on the best place to start.

I have currently completed a 60point course in social sciences,I am starting a childhood and youth studies course in january, am I heading in the wrong direction if i want to do conselling or would these courses be helpful and count towards counselling.?

Answer by voluntary user(s)

The foundation degree in Counselling from the OU is completed by doing part of the training outside the ou through the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB), where in partnership, they offer two courses you need to complete and then do some OU courses to get the foundation degree. Depending on the course you have already done, there may be an options for you, but the full list of courses are available through http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/qualification/G14.htm.
